Believe it or not, but this picture is from Hong Kong. This city is lovely, easy to fall in love and warm. It's not super hot or anything. It's like a normal Finnish summer: +24, though the humidity is very high. It's good to be here.

It's my birthday today and for the first time in my life I am going to spend it all alone. Sniff.

Lama Temple / Yonghe Temple

Yonghe Tample = Lama Temple is so far the most beautiful place I've visited in China. It's amazingly quiet, calm and peaceful.

Lama Temple is the largest lamasery (Tibet's buddhists) in Beijing (maybe even in the whole China?). There are five different halls or pavilions, which are getting bigger and bigger the one after another. Last pavilion is called The Pavilion of infinite happiness and there is a huge statue of Maitreya. It's 26 meters tall.

Beijing, China.

We are getting along, but we are not going to be best buddies. It has been a hard trip for me so far. It has been the hardest trip of my life (don't worry, I'm just OK and in Hong Kong at the moment I write this).

Beijing itself is huge, cold and not so easy to access as I hoped. It is so huge that you might walk for a long time without seeing really anyone. Can you imagine that to happen in China? Nope. This is a good season to travel to China, because there is not that many tourists (or any other people).

In Beijing it's totally fine to stare at the people. As I've been the only western around, I've been so much stared. Luckily it happens to be my favourite hobby as well, so I stare them back.

There are not that many people, who can speak English. That's pretty hazardous especially in the restaurants, when me as a vegetarian, try to make sure that there is absolutely not any meat in that food. Guess how many times I've got food with the meat.

Generally Chinese are very friendly, they try to help or at least smile back.

In my favourite place, metro, no one is reading a book, but everyone has a smart phone, which they are touching. Oh, and I had a interesting coincidence in the public toilet at the mall: I needed to go to toilet and I was checking, if there was any unoccupied. There was a one with the door open, but what I saw: a young Chinese girl doing her dump on the hole (reikävessa) and touching her smart phone at the same time. Now I understand the research about the amount of bacterium in the phones..

It's a Valentine's Day and I'm alone in Hong Kong. I feel a bit shit about that, because here it's very big thing. I think I will pack myself inside my hotel room as early as I can, watch the news and eat candies.

People, love each others. It's the most important task in our lives.

Hong Kong is lovely. It is enough Chinese to be excotic, but in the lovely way it is also western. I like it here.

I arrived today and will leave after a week. I feel to be free, because I can use Facebook and blogger as I want. I will add some pictures, when I collect some energy from somewhere.

Näin olen jättänyt asunnon (hetkellisesti) remppamiesten "hellään huomaan". Hermoilen jo nyt eteisen ja keittiön lattian kunnosta rempan jälkeen: tyypit aloittivat asunnossa lampsimisen lumisilla kengillään ennen kuin olivat lattioita suojanneet. Kiristelin hampaita, mutta pidin naamani. Pakkohan heillekin on antaa työrauha (ja mulla on kuvat jokikisestä sentistä tuolla asunnossa, joten raastuvassa nähdään). En tiedä, mitä odottaa, kun palaamme takaisin sinne.

Tulin tappamaan aikaa keskustaan, koska kotona ei vaan voi enää olla. Vähän kahvia, kohta kaverin kanssa lounasta ja sitten viimeinen silmäys kotiin ja lentokentälle. Kiina odottaa, mutta minä en tiedä, mitä odottaa Kiinalta. Olen melkoisen skeptinen ja ennakkoluuloinen tuota maata kohtaan, joten katsotaan, miten minun käy. Voittaako Kiina minut puolelleen ja osoittautuvatko ennakkoasenteeni vääriksi. Se jää nähtäväksi. Lupaan ainakin yrittää, mutta niitä ihmisoikeusloukkauksia en voi hyväksyä. Missään tilanteessa.

Katsotaan pääsenkö päivittämään blogia reissun aikana, pieniä vippaskonsteja käyttämällä, sen pitäisi onnistua. Toivotan teille hyvää helmikuuta, itselleni ehjää kotia, hyvin sujuvaa remonttia ja erityisesti oikein kivaa seikkailua Kiinassa.

Putkiremontti alkaa kuuden päivän kuluttua. Hermot alkavat olla jo mukavan pingottuneet, eivät ihan vielä ole napsahtaneet poikki, mutta lähellä on. Tähän remontin muotoon liittyy hyvin paljon asioita, joita en ymmärrä.

1) En ymmärrä sitä, että asunnon omistajalta viedään loppujen lopuksi oikeus ja sananvalta omaan kotiin ("Se rättipatteri on otettava, ei vaihtoehtoa").

2) Urakoitsijan ei tarvitse noudattaa aikatauluja, mutta asettaa asukkaalle järjettömiä deadlineja ("Huomisen jälkeen tähän ei enää saa tehdä muutoksia, vaikket ole edes nähnyt tarjottavaa tavaraa.")

3) Jos ei ole rakennusalan ammattilainen tai omaa kätyriä taloyhtiön hallituksessa, kukaan ei kerro mitä asunnosasi tapahtuu. Vaikka kysymyksiä esität, ei ole taattu, että vastausta saat. Pahimmassa tapauksessa (meidän tapauksessa) edes piirrustukset ja suunnitelmat tehnyt arkkitehti ei voi olla varma, mitä asunnossamme tapahtuu. Juju on siinä, että kukaan ei ole käynyt tässä asunnossa paikan päällä katsomassa, mitä täällä on. Eikä piirrustuksissa ole huomioitu vanhan talon poikkeavia rakenteita.

En suosittele tätä kenellekään. Unelma ihanasta, uudesta, talon hengen mukaisesta ja persoonallisesta kylppäristä on jo haudattu. Samaa bulkkia tulee jokaiseen asuntoon (paitsi, jos olet varakas - sillä reilulla 800 euron neliöhinnalla ei saa kuin saatanallisen remonttilainan). Jos haluaa mitään muutoksia, jok'ikinen risaus maksaa ylimääräistä. Tonnit vain vilistävät silmissä, kun haaveita hahmottelee paperille. Surullista on se, että rakennusalan ammattilaiset muualla Suomessa pyörittelevät vain päätään näille Helsingin hinnoille. Järjetöntä. Mallikylppärin työn jäljen nähneenä, hyytää ajatus siitä, millaista jälkeä omassa kylppärissä tehdään.

Kysynpä vain, onko tämä koko putkiremonttihelvetti suomalaisten täydellistä kusetusta?

First round of Presidential Election happened today. It was exciting as the second candidate for the second round was confirmed on the very last minutes. My candidate got through, which I'm happy about.

We have a friend visiting: we were real tourists and took a boat to Suomenlinna. That lonely island shows its best during the cold winter days. Island stays quiet, deserted and freaking cold. I was lucky to have my thick winter shoes. Happy moment of the day: a brave little cat came to salute us.

Talvi tuli. Talvi meni. Se ikuinen väsymys ja heräämisvaikeudet eivät hävinneet yhtään minnekään. Tänään on 13. päivä perjantai. Huomasin sen ensimmäisenä aamulla, kun hiustenkuivaaja ei inahtanutkaan. Pää märkänä siis töihin. Väsy painaa silmiä ja piilarit aiheuttavat harotusta. Taidan olla tänään iloinen näky.

Ja ainiin. Facebookin statuspäivityksen myötä kaikki luulevat, että lähden 15 kuukaudeksi Lontooseen. En lähde. Se on vitsi. Tosin huono sellainen, kun pitää kaikille selitellä.

I got this award from Lady Dada. Thank you dear. There is a kind request to answer to couple of questions. Here we go.

1) Favourite food.
Wow, how come the first question is already so difficult? Isn't it supposed to start with the easy one, kind of warm up? I love food. No, I correct I love good food. It can be traditional Finnish food like fried pike perch (or perch), almost which ever Thai or Indian dish. I could mention here also one shrimp-lemon pasta J makes sometimes. J's cousin makes lovely mussels. My dubious favourites are also oysters, but only in France and in the special occassion. In my top ten there are also porridges (rice and barley).

EDIT// I forgot all the cheeses!

2) Favourite sweets.

Can we skip this? I do have a problem with the sweets. Especially the ones, which have lots of E-stuff and all that artificial shit. I do love chocolate as well. Salmiakki = salty liquorice.

3) Favourite book.

It's boring that I repeat myself, but this is difficult. My favourite books varies by time, but at the moment I could say Puhdistus by Sofi Oksanen, Seitsemän veljestä by Aleksis Kivi, Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, La Dame aux Camélias by Alexander Dumas (the son) and lately I've been carried away by Tuomas Kyrö (Mielensäpahoittaja, 700 grammaa).

4) Favourite way to do handcrafts.

5) Favourite film.

Lately I've been watching only brainless shit, but let me think. Le Havre by Aki Kaurismäki is the best Finnish film I've ever seen. Icelandic Nói Albínói by Dakur Kári is lovely, A Single Man by Tom Ford was touching and beautiful. Brokeback Mountain by Ang Lee left a mark on me as did the new version of Casino Royal with Daniel Craig. There are probably about thousands of films, which I love, but I just don't remember now.

I love all the films where is Mr Darcy, I mean Colin Firth. I just noticed that there's coming a new Bridget Jones film in 2013 and its name is Bridget Jones's Baby..

Lasillinen samppanjaa tekee elämästä heti moninkerroin arvokkaampaa. Kyllä, se varmasti johtuu siitä, että lasillinen maksaa tuplat peruskuohariin verrattuna, mutta suotakoon tällaisia pieniä hohdokkaita hetkiä itsekullekin. Se, että ulkona sataa vettä ja on hyytävän kosteaa, ei tarkoita, että täytyisi rämpiä tuossa loskassa itsekin 24/7. Muutaman tunnin ajan voi kuvitella sipsutellevansa 12 cm koroissa pariisilaisilla kaduilla ja kohentaa design takkinsa kauluksia.

Ei sillä niin väliä, että kahvilasta lähtiessä lontustaa menemään tasapohjaisilla maihareilla kirppistakissa. Sydän on kevyt ja mielikin hetken järjestyksessä. Kiitos D.

But obviously I am not. I think it's still plus something degrees, raining all the time and windy. No snow, no jingle bells, no Christmas. Luckily I have lots of candles as a leftover from the last winter. There's not anything more soothing than a candle light.

There's been surprisingly many "pikkujoulu" = Pre-Christmas parties this year. This is a tuff season and last weekend I really felt it.. And of I go again to have a wonderful food with the wonderful people. Enjoy your evening and the new week.

Hoh.

This non-winter is sucking all my good energy. I don't feel taking pictures, I'm in the middle of two books (other is boring, other seems to be good), I'm in the middle of two different knitting projects (they will be ready maybe next autumn).

I feel that I'm in the middle of everything and not heading anywhere. I have no idea, what's going to happen in the coming February. Everything is open and at at the same time everything is settled. Somewhere deeply inside me, I'm also a tiny bit afraid. I wish it will change to excitement.

Oh, I just heard from the radio that Björk is coming to Finland next summer for Flow festival! This day just became a bit brighter!

Kipiänä kotona. Ehdin jo ajatella, ettei kuumetta tule, räkää vaan. Mutta pah, niin se vain veti mittarit ylös. Olen kipeilyn suhteen sen verran malttamaton ja tylsistysherkkä, että taidan tänään käydä iltapäivällä vähän töissä. Ihan vähän vain, jos se kuume ei tänään nousisi edes lämpötasolle. Hengittäminenkin on jo helppoa. En ole toivon mukaan enää tautiriski muillekaan.

Neulon elämäni ensimmäistä vakavasti otettavaa villapaitaa. Kyllä, olen tehnyt aloitteita vähemmän vakavasti otettavien tapausten kanssa. Ei niistä mitään ole tullut. Nyt olen tosissani tämän ihanana islantilaisen langan kanssa. Vähän huolettaa, että liekö lankaa tarpeeksi.

I've been a bit ill. Normal flue and fever. Yesterday I lost almost my voice, today is much better. Breathing is fine and I'm bored. I've started to knit my very first pullover. Let's see what happen, but this Islandic wool is wonderful and its smell.

Btw, it's bizarre that you have to write on the clementine bag that it's 100% natural and it doesn't contain any post harvesting treatments. What is a post harvesting treatment?

Pipe repair

Vuoden epätietoisuuden jälkeen olemme saaneet tiedon, että nyt se putkiremontti alkaa. Jopa jo niinkin pian kuin Helmikuussa. Remontista on tulossa himpun kalliimpi kuin toivoin, mutta samalla rakennetaan taloyhtiöön kaksi saunaa (jee!) ja palohälytysjärjestelmä.

Ärsyttääpä vain iloisesti se, että meillä olisi ollut jo yksi asukasilta, mutta meille ei ollut tullut kutsua! Kysymyksiä ja epätietoisuutta on niin paljon, että ihan yhdellä puhelinkeskustelulla eivät ne taida selvitä. Riemua ja kiukkua täällä.

Beetroot is not too often on my plate although I truly like it. Last night I made something good for the dinner: beetroots, honey, blue cheese (as much as you feel to), pine nuts (I roasted them a bit), thyme and salt (only a pinch, blue cheese is salty).

Slice the beetroots and stack them on the oven casserole. Crumble the blue cheese on top and add the pine nuts and the spices. Cook it in the oven (ca. 180) for about one hour. Eat with a good, fresh rye bread.

I love rye bread. Rakastan ruisleipää. Erityisesti sellaista itäsuomalaista: tummaa ja totista. Kotitekoista varsinkin. Sain tänään kassin, jonka sisällä oli muun muassa ruisleipä. Tuore, Kanniston leipomon ruisleipä. Kotiin tultuani kuorin punajuuria ja ajattelin maistaa leipää.

Voi taivas, miten hyvä leipä! Meni siinä maistellessa puolet leivästä eikä punajuuriherkkua ole vielä edes uunista otettu. Taitaa se toinen puolikas mennä sitten punajuurien kanssa. Olen iloinen, että Helsingissä on onnistuttu tekemään näin makoisa leipä. Ei kaipaa kuin voita päälle, vaihtelun vuoksi vähän Oltermannia joka toiselle palaselle.

Huominen ja Lady Dada tuo tullessaan pientä luksusta: Jane Birkin laulaa Gainsbourgia Savoyissa. Tämä taitaa olla se ilta, kun voi laittaa nätin mekon päälle.

Lovely Stockholm is lovely even in October

Stockholm. My love. I just don't get over it how wonderful that city is, even if you can spend only six hours there, it is adorable.

I got a chance to go there for a short trip with my friends last weekend. The light over there was amazing, Fotografiska was offering its best and the peanut butter brownie was like a cherry on the top of a milkshake. When could I see you again? For a bit longer time then?

Forgotten films

We have some "funny cameras" as we call them. One Holga, some vintage TLR and SLR's plus some toys like Fuji Instax mini camera and a super sampler.

It has happened that we've kind of forgot to bring to films to a photo shop and finally today we got the pictures back. There where many surprises over a year ago! Nice to spend a Monday evening looking at the pictures from the Summer 2010, our house warming party and friends' weddings!

It's a sauna evening

Saturday night has always been the real sauna evening. When I was a kid, it had it's own routines. Sauna is a place, where you should not talk too loud, you can't misbehave. Sauna is a place to wash yourself, also clear your mind.

I love sauna and because at the moment we don't have one of our own, the chances to go to sauna are only few. Ether I enjoy sauna, when I'm visiting my home in Savo, or in the swimming pool (not counted) or one wonderful place in Kallio: Kotiharjun sauna is amazing old sauna less than kilometer away from where we live. It's the last public sauna in Helsinki, where they have a stove for wood. It's the place, where all the men are cooling off outside of the building, if you pass by it.

This places is a real treasure in our city.

Keskustelimme keittiössä.
Miksi tyydymme joko luomu tai reilun kaupan tuotteisiin tai lähiruokaan. Miksei kauppojen hyllyiltä löydy luomu lähiruokaa, joka olisi vielä reilua sen tuottajalla? Mistä tulevat mansikat luomujogurttiin? Entä omenat luomumehuun? Ansaitseeko tuote enää luomu-merkintää, jos se matkustaa muovipakkauksissa ruokakaupan hyllyyn tuhansien kilometrien päästä? Kysymyksiä, joita toivoisin ihmisten pysähtyvän miettimään.

Koska näkisimme kaupassa jokaisen tuotteen kohdalla, mikä osa tuotteesta maksettavasta hinnasta menee kullekin tuotteen elinkaaren aikana olevalle tekijällä? Kiinnostaisipa vain tietää, millaisia reaktioita tuollainen taulukko maitopurkin vieressä aiheuttaisi kuluttajissa. Tai reilun 400 euron Filippa K:n miesten takissa, joka on valmisettu Kiinassa.

Koska Suomessa annetaan Reilun kaupan sertifikaatti esimerkiksi maitotuotteille tai vihanneksille? Utopiassa se olisi jo annettu, tässä maailmassa sitä saamme odottaa. Ikuisesti. Sitä odotellessa ostakaa ihmiset lähiruokaa.

Fishfood on my plate

Lukioaikana opin eräältä vegaanilta hauskan ja halvan pikaruokareseptin: spagettia ja norihiutaleita. Ehkä vähän öljyä ja avot. Tätä herkkua tuli silloin joskus kauan sitten syötyä enemmänkin ja aina silloin tällöin myöhemminkin.

Ranskasta löysin "kalastajan mausteen". Pussissa on erilaisia leviä kuivatettuina ja täytyy sanoa, että maistuu hyvältä. Ehkä vähän outoa, en välttämättä vieraille tarjoaisi, mutta olkoonkin tämä oma pieni herkkuni. Eipä siis muuta kuin vähän spagettia, kalastajan maustetta, öljyä ja parmesania. Nam!

Ehkä olen edellisessä elämässäni ollut valas.

Lauantaina on kirpputoripäivä! Tosin tälle kirpputorille en tänään pääse, mutta vielä viime maanantaina täällä pyörin. Le Marché aux Puces Saint-Ouen, Pariisissa. Love it, love it!

Rakastan niin kovin kirppisten tavararöykkiöitä, kauniita vanhoja esineitä ja tarinoita, joita ne kantavat mukanaan. Erityisesti pidän siisteistä ja ei pahalle haisevista kirpputoreista.

In the neighbour there is a farm from where you can pick apples for a tarte tatin by yourself. I think we got just enough (in total 65 kg of apples).

Saint Malo

One word: The Sea.

Saint Malo is a beautiful small city by the sea. At the autumn most of the tourists are gone and you can walk on your own on the beach. The wind is mild and the birds are flying away.

Cancale is famous for its oysters. This small village happened to be on our way from St Malo to Le Havre, so stopped to have a special lunch: 13 oysters for 4,50 euros!

Kuinka voikaan 8-, 5- ja 2-vuotiaan syntymäpäiväjuhlat ottaa näin voimille. Launtai-illan päivällisellä jo vyötä höllennettiin ja jälkiruokaa syötiin vielä yhden aikaan yöllä. Sunnuntaina lounas jotenkin kummallisesti päättyi vasta aperitiiviaikaan ja yhtäkkiä pöydässä oli jälleen lautaset ja ruokaa.

Goat cheese

Warm goat cheese salad. That it is, the savour of Monday evening with a glass of wine. On Saturday ended my eating-only-yogurt-season. Honestly, when I'm alone, don't feel to cook for myself only.

One of us is feeling blue, because of the rain, clouds and darkness. He's heard that in France the weather is amazing now: +28, sunny and warm. He is sure that the weather will change by Saturday. I think he has been too long in Finland, because he has adapted the Finnish mentality: the pessimism.
